6 ways to tell that a DJ is a part-time amateur

One of the biggest problems with Hawaii DJs is that most all of them are all part-time DJs yet they all claim to be professional. Search on Craigslist.com or google for “DJ Oahu” , DJ Hawaii “DJ Honolulu” and you can find many Hawaii Wedding DJs all claiming to be professional. Most Hawaii DJs, Oahu DJs, or Honolulu DJs all work a full time job and DJ part-time. In my opinion a professional should be someone full time. Just because you get paid for something does not mean you’re a professional. A part-time DJ will not be very reliable mainly because they will be fair more dedicated to their full-time job. If they get call in to work their full time job on the day of your event they will cancel on you at the last minute.

Here are 6 ways to tell that a DJ is a part-time amateur:

1. The DJ is slow to respond to emails or return phone calls. If a DJ is working a full time job other than DJing, chances are they will not have time to properly respond to their clients & are often hard to get a hold of.

2. The DJ does not have proof of Insurance. Many DJs who claim to have insurance actually don’t. Ask for proof. Most full time wedding professionals will have insurance & will be able to provide with an insurance certificate & insurance provider to call to verify the policy. A part time DJ will generally not take their business serious enough to get insurance.

3. Lack of online reviews. If a DJ claims to be a full time professional with years of experience they should have plenty of consistent reviews on sites like Wedding Wire.

4. Lack of professional affiliation. Like other professions a full time DJ will be part of trade organizations such as The Oahu Wedding Association (OWA) or The American DJ Association (ADJA)

5. No Industry Reputation. If your DJ claims to be professional they should be known & well liked by other full time wedding professionals such as your venue manager, photographer, or wedding coordinator. If they are unknown or not well liked, they are probably an amateur.

6. The DJ specializes in everything. Just like professionals such as doctors or lawyers who specialize in a unique area, a professional full time DJ should specialize in one area. DJs that tend to do a wide variety of event such as weddings, corporate events, high school dances, nightclubs, & birthdays with no specialty are generally part timers as they lack the skills & time to be specialized.

By asking the right questions, you should be able to determine if you are dealing with a reputable Hawaii DJ company & individual DJ.

Professional Hawaii DJs get booked from 6 to 18 months in advance, so start looking early in your planning process. It’s your day and you will want it to be fun, refined, and personalized. Make sure you are completely confident and comfortable with the DJ that you hire so you can enjoy a fun and stress free celebration.
