Tunics date back as far as 100BC in the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The very loose meaning of a tunic is an item of clothing that starts at the shoulder and falls below the hipline. It can easily be said that through out history, the tunic has been one of the most popular items of clothing and has had one of the widest adaptations of styling done to it.  Every country in the world seems to have a "traditional" costume that has some sort of rendition to the tunic. And now, we fast forward to 2011, and the tunic is once again the most sought after item of clothing in a women’s wardrobe!

With the popularity of the "skinny jean" and leggings, women have no other option but to have tunics of many styles and colors in their closet.  What do women want in a tunic? They want their tunic to be stylish and versatile, an item that they can wear for any occasion.  Tunics that are 100% cotton, with prints ranging from fun and whimsical to charming and sophisticated are usually the most sought after. The fit of tunics allow for many different body types to look great in them.  Sleeveless tunics are good, so you can layer them in cold weather and wear by themselves in hot weather. The versatility is amazing with styles that sport big roomy pockets to use for holding necessities or putting your hands in for just plain comfort.

The other great thing about tunics is the variety of ways you can wear them. The obvious is with skinny jeans or leggings but really any type of bottom: here are a few tips. If you have wide legged pants, just make sure to belt your tunic to add definition to your waist. With skirts, have the length be at least 2" longer than the tunic. The tunics look absolutely great with Bermuda shorts for a fun sporty look. As to what to wear underneath your tunic, wear by themselves or with a tank, tee, turtleneck, even a button up collared shirt, which gives your tunic a more business appeal. Don't forget to accessorize with necklaces, earrings and bracelets, which will help top off your own style statement.
