DePuy, the company recently accused of releasing two defective hip replacement systems, has always been a company with a solid reputation. The company has focused on orthopedic and neuroscience solutions and was bought by Johnson & Johnson is 1998. Some of the company's divisions include Codman, DePuy Mitek, DePuy Orthopedics and DePuy Spine.
The company has always specialized in orthopedics design, particularly systems for damaged or diseased joints, as well as skeletal injuries. The intent of its products is to help fuse the spine and correct any spinal deformities or fractured bones. Before Johnson & Johnson acquired the company, DePuy was its own brand, first starting in 1895 in Warsaw, Indiana. Fiber splints for fracture surgery were the first product to be released.
Nowadays, Johnson & Johnson controls a large empire of manufacturing facilities. DePuy itself has several branches, including the U.K., Japan, France, Ireland, Australia and Germany. Johnson & Johnson also dates back to the 19th century. The pharmaceutical company has been releasing medical devices and packaged goods since the year 1886. To this day, it is a Fortune 500 Company and makes up part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Why, Johnson & Johnson have even gone above and beyond the business standard. The company has won numerous awards, mainly because of its professionalism. The company ranked at the top of the Harris Interactive's National Corporate Reputation Survey, and even earned recognition as the world's most respected company by Barron's Magazine. Why, Johnson & Johnson even won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy by the U.S. State Department for its funding of international education programs.
The DePuy recall has not reflected favorably on the DePuy division at all, and some of this bad publicity is sure to make its way back to Johnson & Johnson. Anticipating the large number of claims and possible lawsuits, the company recently hired Broadspire, the largest claims adjuster in the world to help sort through the mess of complaints. Even though some claimants are being taken of through the companys claim process, there remain some individuals with special circumstances who are not.
If this is happening to you, or if you have another complaint against DePuy and Johnson & Johnson, talk to your doctor right away. The first step is to actually get the physical evidence needed to pursue a trial. In fact, you may not need surgery at all; so be sure to have the facts. After gaining this information (and protecting it from others) you can decide whether you want to take up DePuys offer of covered expenses, or file a DePuy lawsuit.
News of various DePuy lawsuits is not too flattering to DePuy. Neither are accusations that the company is trying to get patients into signing away their medical records to the company, potentially allowing such medical evidence to be used as a defense in court. The company has already lost some high profile cases against clients in other litigation. Only time will tell what this recall will do to DePuy in the long run. For now, protect yourself and your health. If applicable in your case, look into your best legal options.
