Today, death caused by fire accidents are happening just about everywhere. Thankfully, fire can be prevented if one will follow safety guidelines unlike natural disasters.
1. Add smoke detectors in your home. This equipment is very important especially if there are family members who smoke. Do not just install one smoke detector instead every level of the home as well as outside of sleeping areas should have a smoke detector. As soon as it is already installed make sure that you test it every month to check if it is still working. Make sure that clean it regularly so that dust won't accumulate. Make sure to also replace the batteries. If you have a family member who is hearing impaired, make sure that you buy smoke detectors specially made for them.
2. Aside from smoke detectors one of the important things you should have to prevent fire is a fire extinguisher. At least 4 should be placed in the kitchen, living room, master's bedroom and the garage. See to it that it is out of reach from the children.
With fire extinguisher, in case there's a fire, you can do something about it so it won't get bigger. Do not attempt to put off a large fire though by spraying fire extinguisher instead get out of the house and call the emergency hotline number-911.
3. Be sure to install a fireplace screen if you have a fireplace in your home. This helps prevent sparks or coals from flying off to your rug which can start fire. Also, avoid leaving matches near the fireplace nor place rugs near the fireplace.
4. Check all your electrical appliances if there are no loose or frayed cords, not doing so can start a fire. And, trash that octopus plug. It is strongly discourage to use octopus plus or to overuse an extension plug. Make sure all appliances that are not used are unplugged.
5. Don't run any electrical plugs under rug, carpet. Never do so.
6. Be sure to have a professional look at any of your electrical appliance that you think smells unusual.
7. Kids should be instructed not to manipulate or plug electrical devices by themselves or better yet do not let them go near or play with kitchen appliances etc. You can also buy plastic safety covers to prevent kids from playing with the outlet.
