Working on any type of construction project or even just basic home repairs needs to start with safety in mind. Fall protection gear and options are essential to make sure that everyone is secure, regardless of how high off the ground or surface area they may have to work. Safety devices including harnesses, lanyards and lifelines, body belts, netting systems and specialized connectors are important to ensure safety as well as prevent accidents. In addition specialized netting systems help protect workers and pedestrians below from the possibility of falling debris.

There are several different devices to provide security directly for individuals that are climbing, working on elevated locations or working in areas where the possibility of falls exists. One of the most popular types of fall protection is the safety harness. Safety harnesses come in a variety of sizes, styles and configurations, perfect for a variety of jobs and working conditions. The body harness needs to be correctly fitted and fastened tight to the body to ensure proper protection.

Universal fit types of harnesses are great for larger businesses or crews where multiple individuals may need to use the same safety equipment. These harnesses have various adjustments that are simple and easy to make with friction buckles and tongue buckles. They also may have stretchable components to the harness that instantly adjust to different body shapes and sizes. Of course the style must be approved by OSHA and ANSI standards and may also need to meet CSA standards. These harnesses will be approved for a specific weight capacity, typically up to 400 pounds, making them ideal for any body size. In addition the harness will also be rated for tensile strength, with higher ratings of up to 8000 pounds or more possible.

Lanyards and lifelines are also important in fall protection gear and accessories. Shock absorbing lanyards and lifelines act more like a soft stop to a fall, rather than a sudden jerk. This not only helps to prevent serious back and neck injuries during a fall but it also provides options for much shorter overall lines that need to be carried on the harness or safety belt. Lanyards can have one or two legs, perfect for more attachments or less to the stable anchoring material. Connectors for anchorage are ideal for wrapping around beams or braces to provide a very secure, non-slip area to anchor the lanyard or lifeline. These very lightweight nylon strap types of anchors are also very easy to carry regardless of the distance of the climb.

For providing safety on high building construction netting systems are ideal for protecting workers below from falling items and debris when used in conjunction with personal fall protection. These systems come in a variety of shapes and sizes and include the netting or mesh, the brackets, cables and all necessary hardware to complete the installation. There are also vertical netting systems that can be used to secure balcony openings or windows prior to installation. Again these systems provide protection to those working below, preventing debris and materials from being knocked over the open areas on the construction site.

Fall protection materials and systems are essential for the individuals working on those high jobs as well as those working below. Having both the harnesses and belts as well as all the accessories makes the workplace safe and secure for everyone. In addition netting systems, guardrails and a variety of types of anchors also provide additional safety, while keep the jobsite well within OSHEA and ANSI safety standards.
