We all know we need a fireplace at home where we can feel warm through the cold months. All of us have one and we are always glad for the soothing feeling it gives when we come home to it. But even when we have probably sought refuge in our fireplace ever since we can remember, not all of us know how to make it work.

Not all of us know what to do or what to have in order to keep that warmth burning. Somebody else always does it for us. However, learning how to do it ourselves is helpful so we can get by on those cold days and nights when we have to stay home alone from time to time. Thus, let's learn the basics of starting that fire and keeping safe with it.

Remember that the fire we make has something to do with the type of wood we use. Most importantly, use dry and old hardwood such as ash or oak. Dry means the wood should have been dry for the last twelve months. The drier the wood, the better your fire. It will shine brighter and it will be hotter. If you choose young wood, you can expect about half of it being moist, so that means you probably won't get as good a fire as what you would using dry, old wood.

It's best to be warm and safe at the same time though it's good to feel warm with the fire we make. So if you must use a substance to hasten the process of starting your fire, do not use any type of liquid accelerants. Some use this chemical and they do achieve their objective of starting a fire faster. However, this substance can be quite dangerous, especially when you throw it when a fire is already burning. The fire can suddenly grow out of control and you could end up burning yourself or your house. Therefore, patience is needed. Use the right kind of wood to get the fire you want in no time.

Of course, safety is a basic concern to protect your home against uncertainty. Consider getting an alarm system that will alert you when carbon monoxide builds up.

Remember that staying in control with your fire is not a difficult task as long as you understand the risks and know the ways to keep them to a minimum.
