No matter what type of electrical appliance, tool or device you have, the right electrical plugs really do make all the different. There are a wide range of options when choosing these devices, from twist lock types of plugs and protective boots to corrosion resistant plugs for outdoor and shop use. Some devices, such as the electrical safety caps, are perfect for adding simple safety features to your home, office or shop so that receptacles not in use aren't used by children.

Often corrosion resistant electrical plugs are used in and around potentially wet areas. These can include boathouses, on the boat itself, in the garage or even for extension cords or electrical equipment that may be used outside in all types of weather. They are perfect for use on outdoor decorations since they won't rust and deteriorate even in snow, sleet or rain.

Typically these will have a straight blade plug which means that two poles or hot and neutral wires will have a straight shaped plug while the ground has the semi-circle type of blade. These are standard and will connect with any female or male receptacle or extension cord outlet as needed. They are designed to carry a specific voltage and amps and most are compatible with standard electric appliances, devices and tools. For marine and heavy duty outdoor use an additional boot, which covers the male plug, adds more protection from moisture over the actual connection itself.

Locking or twist lock plugs are specially designed to resist pulling away from the female end of the connection. The blades on the plug are straight but they have a square on the end, more like an old fashioned skeleton key. This acts to lock the plug in place with a slight twist, preventing accidental disconnection. Ideally on jobsites where you may be working a long distance from the outlet or the temporary receptacle this can save a lot of trips back to plug your extension cord in if you have to give it a good pull or if someone accidentally trips or pulls on the cord. There are also adaptors available to match a twist lock plug to a standard plug, good for adding versatility to all of your extension cords and allowing it to connect to non-twist types of devices.

Hazardous area electrical plugs are important if you are working where static or electrical discharge may be a problem. These plugs are designed to eliminate any type of sparking due to exposure of the plug to gases, vapors or dusts that may be highly likely to flash given any type of electrical exposure. The plug itself will be specified or certified for specific types of classes, divisions and types of hazardous locations. These plugs are highly resistant to corrosion or deterioration due to exposure to moisture. While they are more costly than other types of plugs they are also important to stay within code and use specifications. Typically these types of plugs are used in laboratories, hazardous work areas and specialized types of services. The average person working on home repair or renovation projects won't need to worry about going to this level of safety.

Using the best and most effective type of electrical plugs and accessories for your large or small projects is important for safety and efficiency. Always use corrosion resistant plugs outdoors or in areas where liquids are used to prolong the life of the plug. Indoor plugs should always have a ground for additional safety.
