These plugs are designed to eliminate any type of sparking due to exposure of the plug to gases, vapors or dusts that may be highly likely to flash given any type of electrical exposure. The plug itself will be specified or certified for specific types of classes, divisions and types of hazardous locations. These plugs are highly resistant to corrosion or deterioration due to exposure to moisture. While they are more costly than other types of plugs they are also important to stay within code and use specifications. Typically these types of plugs are used in laboratories, hazardous work areas and specialized types of services. The average person working on home repair or renovation projects won't need to worry about going to this level of safety.
